On Instagram, you want to be using hashtags that are both relevant and descriptive. Using relevant tags minimises the risk of users selecting the “don't show for this hashtag” option.
So, if you're a dog trainer, for example, you're going to want to use hashtags with the words dog, training, pet and so on in them.
But then what you want to do, is to find the most popular trending hashtags related to those subjects and include those in your post as well.
Finding popular hashtags related to your niche, or even using more generally popular hashtags like #instagood, #tbt or #photooftheday will put your post in front of a lot more people, giving It the best possible chance to get the most amount of likes.
Make sure your photos and videos are of high quality.
Research has shown that higher quality videos and photos get far more likes.
If you want as many people as possible to click that heart, make sure that every photo and video you post is top-notch.
For an extra boost to your like count, try posting pictures or videos with faces in them (it doesn't have to be your face, any human face will do) as this is likely to increase the number of likes that you receive by up to 38%.
Also, paying attention to the colours that you are using can increase your like count. Pictures that use a lot of blue, for example, get 24% more likes than those which are predominantly red.
If you are editing your photos or videos, you should always use Instagram’s own editing tools. Also, if you want more likes, try to vary things up by using different filters, angles and perspectives.
Make your words count.
Instagram is not just about pictures and videos, it's about marrying those pictures and videos with the right descriptions. You'll get a lot more likes on your posts if you put a bit of thought into your captions.
The best captions work well with the image or thumbnail. There’s no character limit, so feel free to tell your story, ask a question, show some love or make a joke. One-liners, quotes and song lyrics work well to increase the number of likes.
